Remake The Rose of Versailles Anime

A new character promotional video has been released for the upcoming The Rose of Versailles anime film, spotlighting one of the co-leads Marie Antoinette. The film will begin screening in Japan on January 31, 2025. In addition, a preview video of the mini-anime series Berubara Mini! will be released alongside the film, with a different episode released for every week the film is screened in Japan.

Ai Yoshimura (Kabukicho Sherlock) is directing the anime film, with Tomoko Konparu (Tonari no Yokai–san series screenwriter and scriptwriter) as screenwriter, Mariko Oka (Tsukipro the Animation, Hell Girl) as character designer, and Hiroyuki Sawano (Attack on Titan Final Season) and KOHTA YAMAMOTO (Attack on Titan Final Season) as music composer. MAPPA is in charge of the animation production.

This is the latest anime project inspired by Riyoko Ikeda’s historical romance manga of the same name. It ran in Shueisha’s Margaret magazine from May 21, 1972 to December 23, 1973 under the Margaret Comics label. Ten tankobon volumes were released in total. Udon Entertainment licensed the manga for release in English.

A revival of the manga series, The Rose of Versailles: Episodes, was released in the same magazine from 2013 to 2018, with four volumes released in total. The manga also inspired a 1979 live-action film titled Lady Oscar, a musical by the Takarazuka Revue Company, a sequel, and spin-offs. A pilot for a new anime movie was shown at the Tokyo International Anime Fair in 2007.

The manga previously inspired a 1979-1980 TV anime series and the 1990 anime film The Rose of Versailles: I’ll Love You As Long As I Live, produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha (now TMS Entertainment).
